Don't know why this hasn't caught on. Been doing it for 20+ years, and it's saved my headers on MULTIPLE occasions. Yes, I'm aware the bottom of the car is dirty. Headers are OLD. Engine has been in there for 6-7 years. Price you pay for reliability. Plus, it actually gets driven quite a bit. LOL Anybody else do this? It spreads the impact out across all the header tubes, and the entire header flexes on impact, instead of smashing individual tubes.

not this but I have seen a pipe used across the front of the car hanging down to protect the oil pan and headers...that way there is no pressure on the headers at all; and no chance of breaking the bolts in the heads. but not a bad idea you got there

You know mike, i had actually thought about those skid plates since i saw you a couple races back. I remember when you first did them, and jerry collins got me to get down and check 'em out. I remember they were brand new with a fresh coat of jet hot on the whole header, skid plate and all!

LOL! ;D Off the bottle, it still runs pretty much like it did back then. This 306 short block is pretty much just like the last 306, but with some aluminum twisted wedge heads. On the bottle, it's picked up pretty good, though. The upcoming 363 will be a nice piece, and should be fun. I'm just going to have to do something about traction. I'm thinking really hard about notching the frame and moving the leaf springs, in an attempt to install a 28x10.5 tire on the back. Mark, you've got a good memory! Yea, I installed those Hooker 4-2-1 collectors, skid plates, and welded up/enlarged the tube inlets at the flange before sending them out to be coated. You'd hardly know they were even coated, now! LOL! I've got some old Tubular Automotive 1-3/4" headers to use with the 363 when it gets installed. Might even test them on this engine next year... and see if the car likes the bigger tubes.

I remember how that car ran back the day. I use to run around in a silver 69 ss. I would make the trip to Huntington every now & then. I was sizing you up one night until I saw you skin ol Bellomy in his chevy powered Mustang II along the flood wall. I decided to stay put. LOL!

(Yea, I should have just looked under your car when I had the chance. LOL) I used spring sliders on the rear and on the front I used the factory hole in the frame, moved the springs to the inside of the frame. I then took a piece of crossmember, notched the floor and welded it in front of the spring and welded an inner spring mount to it. Here is a pic of the construction
